I am not a math person. Some of my children are not math persons. Others of them are. Over the years, as I have dealt with both math persons and non-math persons, in the context of having to launch them, eventually and more or less single-handedly, into the rest of their lives, I have distilled my philosophy of math education to the following single word:
Whatever.?
*
OK, that's not really acceptable as a philosophy of anything. Try again.
*
I have often observed that one of the real advantages of homeschooling is the way that it gives the student opportunities to struggle honestly with something difficult and not (ultimately) fail. That is, the student may fail the first time, or the fifth time, but because we're not rushing on to the next thing, we can count those as attempts toward a summit of mastery. We work at what doesn't come easily to us until we can get it at least acceptably right, and the getting it right is what we count in the end. Nobody says, Oh, you didn't climb Mount Everest that time; ?obviously you're a loseroid at climbing, generally, and will never climb anything ever. Maybe you're a hole-digger, have you ever thought of that??
Homeschooling also means that what works for one child does not have to work for the next, that a "good" curriculum is only as good as the good it does that student.
*
Thus far I have educated one person who would not voluntarily touch anything mathematical with a ten-foot pole, and one person who embodies the title of a book I picked up once at a library sale: ?A Romp Through Mathematics. The only thing that really worked for the former student was the Teaching Textbooks series, which I wish I had bought sooner than I did, because it would have saved us endless algebraic angst early on. She could self-teach, which was what she wanted, and while various mathematically-inclined friends of mine have opined that the program lacks depth and rigor, it was the right choice for a student who was, as my own college math professor put it, "not making a career of mathematics." In this instance, the question was not whether the student was going to learn mathematics deeply enough; ?it was whether she was going to learn mathematics at all. My own experience has been that it is, truly, entirely possible to spend fourteen years in school and not learn mathematics at all; ?as a parent?I was eager that my daughter not relive that part of my life. Teaching Textbooks was the answer in this instance, and while her standardized test scores in mathematics were not that impressive, she did pass her one college math class (Euclidian and Non-Euclidian Geometries) with a B+, which we both regarded as a highly satisfactory closure to the mathematical chapter of her story.
My second child, and current high-schooler, began working through Saxon Algebra 1/2, which I'd picked up off a freebie table at a homeschool-support-group meeting,?as a sixth grader. I have never been particularly a fan of Saxon and have always said, Hear hear, when people have described it as dull, dry, repetitive, and so on. Saxon looks to me the way math classes felt?to me. Brrrr. Prickly. Unfriendly. Inhuman.?No, thanks.?My son, on the other hand,?credits Saxon with awakening him to the enjoyment of math. He is also very much a self-teacher, and my approach to his math has been to buy the Saxon books, because that's what he's requested, and to find some video-teaching component to accompany them, either the D.I.V.E. CDs or the Art Reed DVD class lectures, for the times when he gets stuck. He also leans heavily on Khan Academy?for help when he needs it. Thus far he has not needed actual tutoring in math, though we do have access to a college tutoring center.
He has so far worked through Saxon's Algebra 1/2?and Algebra 1, and is currently in Algebra 2. Though, supposedly, the two algebras are supposed to cover geometry as well, I've had him do as much of Teaching Textbooks Geometry as he could get through last summer, for the sake of dealing with proofs, and he will probably finish that course next summer (Because we already own it, that's why). From there he will either move into Saxon's Advanced Mathematics or begin taking classes at the college, as math professors advise us. His ultimate interests have to do with science, and it will behoove him in high school to take as much math as he can as well, to be a strong candidate for the kinds of things he wants to do in the future.
*
Unlike me, my friend Anne-Marie is a math person, and I rather suspected that her philosophy with regards to mathematics would not be whatever. I was glad that she responded to a plea for input on this subject with the following:

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama could name his next defense secretary in December, far sooner than expected and perhaps in a high-powered package announcement with his choice for secretary of state, several senior administration officials tell The Associated Press.
The personnel moves, coupled with Obama's coming choice for a new leader of the Central Intelligence Agency, will be viewed by U.S. allies and enemies alike as signal of how he will pursue national security in a second term. All of his choices will be subject to Senate confirmation, which itself is a significant factor in his decisions.
The top names under consideration for defense secretary are former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, former top Pentagon official Michele Flournoy, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Democratic Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. Among those, Kerry is seen as desiring the secretary of state's job more.
While Obama has made no final decisions on Cabinet vacancies, announcements could come as soon as next week.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has made clear he did not intend to stay for a second term but he has never publicly discussed the timing of his departure, widely thought to be down the road in 2013. Yet Obama's thinking on Panetta's replacement has quietly advanced, aided by a strong list of candidates, officials said.
One senior U.S. official said Panetta is expected to stay on the job at least through the Jan 21 inauguration ceremony for Obama, another sign that the president is close to naming a new defense chief. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss internal White House thinking.
Far more political attention has centered on the chief diplomatic job of secretary of state.
Obama is believed almost certain to pick Kerry or U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, with Obama's considerations of his choice so closely held that even members of his innermost circle are asking each other which way he may go. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has long announced her plans to leave and hopes to do so soon.
The White House is considering packaging the state and defense choices with the flourish of a unified announcement, if the pieces come together. The president wants to choose nominees not just on their merits, the officials said, but on how well their styles and philosophy mesh with other members of the Cabinet who will hold overlapping portfolios.
That is particularly true for the leaders of state and defense. They are the top faces of his security apparatus, the leaders who bracket Obama at Cabinet meetings, the ones central to an integrated approach toward coping with international crises. Officials close to Obama said a joint announcement could present a stronger message.
For the State job, Obama has strong ties to both candidates. Rice is a close friend, and aides say the two are in lockstep on foreign policy. Kerry was an early backer of Obama during his 2008 presidential bid, a valuable envoy abroad, a help in his re-election bid and a contender to be his first secretary of state.
A big factor in Obama's decision is how much early capital he would have to spend on a confirmation fight. While Kerry has the backing of his longtime Senate colleagues, Rice is facing withering criticism from some Republicans for her initial account of the deadly attack on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, in September.
A contentious confirmation fight could send Rice into the job with weakened support and use up some of the tough votes he may need from allies in the Senate later. Still, Obama has already set a tone that he may choose Rice regardless.
A decision on new leadership for the CIA is not as urgent. That's partly because Acting Director Michael Morell is still dealing with the fallout of David Petraeus' resignation over an extramarital affair and the battles with lawmakers over the events that led to the death of four Americans in Libya.
Morell is highly respected within the administration and seen as a top contender.
Other candidates are the White House's top counterterrorism and homeland security advisor, John Brennan, and the Pentagon's top intelligence official, Undersecretary for Defense Intelligence Michael Vickers, a former CIA officer and Green Beret. Also possible is the former senator Hagel, should he miss out for the top Pentagon job. Hagel co-chairs Obama's intelligence advisory board and held senior positions on the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees.
A near-term shakeup at the Defense Department would come as the Pentagon faces a flurry of decisions on troop levels in Afghanistan and budgets. The looming end-of-the year spending cuts the White House and Congress are seeking to avert would hit the Pentagon particularly hard.
At Defense, Hagel would give Obama a whiff of bipartisanship, and could be the only Republican in the Cabinet if Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood leaves, as expected.
Flournoy would be the first woman to lead the Defense Department. She served in the Pentagon under Panetta as undersecretary of defense for policy, resigning early this year. She served as a foreign policy adviser to Obama during his re-election campaign.
Carter, who has served as deputy defense secretary for the past year, is a protege of former Defense Secretary William Perry.

Aberdeen's Woodside Writers group is preparing for the launch of its first book ? an anthology of poetry and prose inspired by the River Don.
The Don, from Source to Sea, produced in association with SURF Aberdeen, features the work of 20 contributors, including members of the creative writing group and independent writers based along the length of the Don.
The creative writing group will launch the book at a special event at the Woodside Fountain Centre on Saturday [1 December] which runs from 7-9pm. All are welcome to attend.
Woodside Writer Lynne Digby said: "It's been hard but enjoyable work and we're all very proud with our first book. We're especially pleased with the quality of the writing and the breadth of the contributions ? the writers come from all ages and all places along the Don.
"Personally speaking, it's brought me a great deal of joy and confidence to be able to share my love of the Don with others such a creative and public format. I hope that this is just the beginning."
Sinclair Laing, SURF Aberdeen project manager said: "I've had a sneak preview of the book and I'm very impressed by the quality of the writing. The poems and prose are high calibre, and range from funny to inspiring to moving.
"Naturally, SURF Aberdeen is very proud to be involved and able to assist with bringing this project to fruition and gain the writers, and the area, more of the attention they so rightly need and deserve."
Mark Lovie, Woodside Writers community project co-ordinator added: "The writers group has been formed for less than two years, yet the quality of their work is timeless. To have achieved formation of a group and a quality publication in such a short period of time is testament to their creative abilities and their drive."
The Woodside Writers group is supported by Fersands Community Project. Publication of this book was made possible with support from the SURF Aberdeen project.
The SURF (Sustainable Urban Fringes) Aberdeen project aims to bring communities, organisations and ideas together to initiate a renewed focus and collaborative management to the River Don area.
The SURF Project is part of the Interreg IVB North Sea Region Programme and is jointly funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Aberdeen City Council.

Maybe the reason Rex Ryan signed off on the Tim Tebow trade was because they spoke the same language.
Or, more accurately, shared the same language processing disability.
Both the Jets coach and backup quarterback have grown up dealing with dyslexia, a fight they?ve won en route to NFL success.
Neither has let the condition be a roadblock, but it has forced them into different ways to learn the game beyond Xs and Os on a printed page.
?And that?s kind of how he plays, right?? Ryan said of Tebow, via Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. ?He finds a way to win. When you look at it, it might not be a traditional way, but all he does, he finds ways to win. And he certainly did that against us in Denver (last season), you know what I mean??
Tebow was born into a family familiar with dyslexia, with his father and older brother both diagnosed. He found out in elementary school and began dealing with it, while Ryan didn?t discover he had it until he was in his? 40s.
When you make your living translating plays on a page onto the field, that can be a problem. But when Tebow arrived at the Jets, quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh asked him how he learned best, and Tebow told him by doing rather than being shown.
?So much in football is touching, feeling, walking through, writing it on boards, drawing Xs and Os,? Tebow said. ?And all those are the best for me.?
?It has to do with finding out how you learn, and you really get it done quickly. I?m not somebody that opens a playbook and just turns and reads and reads. That doesn?t do it for me. So I just made flashcards, I take each one, and then boom, when I?m traveling, I just flip through it. That really helped me. Writing it down, flipping through and quizzing myself, that was a great way for me to do it.?
Ryan said in his experience, overcoming dyslexia turned him into a problem-solver, and he thought that applied to his quarterback as well.
?I don?t think it makes me respect him more, because I respect coach Ryan a lot,? Tebow said. ?What it does is just show that learning disabilities, especially dyslexia, have nothing to do with how smart or intelligent someone is. Because there are not many minds in the NFL that are as bright or as sharp or as flexible as coach Ryan?s.?
?That?s one of the coolest things to hear coach Ryan?s story. It?s something to share with kids, that, ?Hey, it is not a big deal.? You can overcome it. You just figure out how you learn, and what?s right for you.?
While it?s easy to joke about Jets fatigue, with the (over)-coverage they?ve received this summer, this is a story that needed to be written, and more people need to read, until the stigma that goes along with learning disabilities is gone.
